Somnath, the First Jyotirlinga
Traditionaly, Dwadash Jyotirlinga pilgrimage begins with the Somnath temple. The present Somnath temple is an elegant reflection of the past glory of Somnath. Built in Kailsah Mahameruprasad style, it was constructed under the guidance of Prabhashankar Sompura. The temple has Garbhagriha, Sabhamandap and Nrityamandap with a 150 feet high Shikhar. The Kalash at the top of the Shikhar weighs 10 tons and the Dhwajdand is 27 feet tall and a foot in circumference.
The temple has large central hall with entrances on three sides, each protected by a lofty porch. The temple carvings and sculptures speak about the great artistic endeavor of the craftsmen who built it. The main gate faces east, and the sense of space and light is glorious.
The sanctum of the temple is spacious. The shivalinga is huge, and one can see the priests performing different pujas. The doors are silver framed with golden ceilings. The entrance is from Shri Digvijay Dwar, and there is a small temple of Ganesh and Hanuman after the entrance, followed by Nandi. Then comes the garbhagriha, where one can have darshan of the jyotirlinga. A Tripurasundari idol on the right side of the sanctum and Ambika Mataji idol on the left side are offered prayers after the jyotirlinga.
Dwadash Jyotirlinga
Only the temple trust appointed pujaris are allowed in the garbhagriha and they only can perform puja. Even the trustees or VIPs cannot visit this area. Being the first revered Jyotirlinga, Somnath also has an importance for various yagna related rituals. There are different pujas performed in temple. While no devotee can perform puja here, this is not the case in all Jyotirlingas. Here the task is performed by priests on behalf of devotees. The trust employs more than 1,000 brahmans for the task.
Somnath Temple opens daily at 6 am for the devotees for darshan, and closes at 9 pm. Aratis are performed three times at 7 am, 12 noon and 7 pm. Aarti is a 20 minute spiritual symphony of music, a star attraction of Somnath Jyotirlinga.
For the security reasons, nothing is allowed inside the temple, not even coconuts for puja. However, there are adequate locker arrangements to keep personal valuables.

Dhwajarohan at Somnath Temple
Reshmi Dhwajarohan at Somnath Temple is a great event for the devotee, and anyone can perform it. A devotee has to contribute money for Dhwajarohan. The temple authorities provide saffron colored Dhwaja, which has embossed symbols of Nandi and Trishul on it. The devotee performs puja of the Dhwaja near garbhagriha. After that ritual, a temple employee takes dhwaja to the top of the temple and unfurls it.
Somnath Trust Managament
Somnath Trust Management is among the best of the Dwadash Jyotirlinga circuit temples. The Trust at present has undertaken several development activities, which include the plan to develop various places and expand facilities.
Somnath is located in a village called Prabhas Patan, having a population of about 12,000. Somnath Museum is just 100 meters away from the Somnath Temple. Here one can see the ruins of the ancient Somnath temple, and waters brought from around the world for pranpratishtha ritual. The authorities have preserved this site very nicely.
Prabhas Khestra - Land of Lord Sri Krishna’s Dehtyag
Somnath, or Prabhas Kshetra, is an important place for Vaisnavas. Lord Sri Krishna established His capital in Dwarka, which was known for its richness. It was the golden era during Lord Krishna’s regime in Dwarka. The Yadavas became arrogant and allowed Dwarka’s glory to wane.
Lord Krishna ended his earthy journey in Prabhash Kshetra (Somnath) along with his elder brother Balarama. This is also the place where Sri Krishna was hit by an arrow of the poacher named Jara, thus the place is known as Bhalka Tirth. After being hit by the arrow, Lord Sri Krishna arrived at the holy confluence of the Hiran, Kapila and Saraswati Rivers, where they join the ocean. He performed His divine Dehtyag leela on the sacred and peaceful banks of River Hiran.

Significance of Pradhosham
The Dhevas wished to be immortal so as to oppose the Asuras. If they
got the panacea called ‘Amirdham’ , they would fight against the mighty Asuras.
But the divine medicine lay deep in the sea of milk.(Paarkadal)
So they started churning the sea of milk. The snake Vasuki was used as
the cord for churning and the mountain Meru was the chosen churn. Lord Vishnu
in the form of Turtle served the base. The Dhevas and the Asuras stood on each
side of the sea and started churning.
The Dhevas , in their hurry to get the Amirdham had forgotten to worship
Lord Siva. They thought that they could get the Amirdham merely by their own
strength and efforts. . This thought had made them forget the divine grace of Siva
without which nothing could happen in this world.
Due to the process of churning, Iravatham, Karpagam, Chinthamani Sri
Lakshmi etc surfaced out of the sea of milk. But even then there was no sign of
Amirdham. Even at that moment they did not think of Siva. Still they continued
the churning process hardly knowing that they were opening the Pandaora’s box.
Deadly Poison (aalakala nanju) started coming out of that sea. Both the
parties were simply stupefied and feared that there was going to be mass killing
due to the poison of very high power. They were simply terrified. Now only did
they realize their mistake of forgetting Lord Siva. Immediately they rushed to
Him and fell down on His Feet and prayed to help them. It was enough that if
they were saved from the effects of the poison, even if they could not get the
panacea., they requested Him.
It was a Dhasami Thithi when the sea of milk was churned.
Siva was pleased by their prayers and drank the heavy poison the next day
that is on the Ekathasi Thithi. for their welfare. Goddess Parvathi was very
much shocked to find her spouse’s reckless act. Immediately She gently pressed
the neck of Siva to prevent the poison from gliding down into the Lord’s body .
The region of the neck became blue in colour due to the stagnated venom in the
Ganta. Hence Siva is called, Neelagantan. This happened in a Saturday.
The poison could not move down. Due tp its presence , Siva became tired
and this happened on the immediate Dhuvadhasi Thithi.
The Dheva groups were moved by the actions of Siva. So they again
prayed to Him. Moved by their prayers, Lord Siva started performing the Dance
called Anantha Thandavam between the two horns of Nandhi Dhevar. The time
when :Lord Siva performed this dance to protect his devotees’ distress was
Pradhosha Kaalam i. e. between 4.30 pm and 6.00 pm in the evening. It occurred
on the immediate Thirayodhasi Thithi day.
Hence Pradhosham is the most auspicious period when Lord Siva saved
his devotees from disaster by his readiness to sacrifice Himself.
Efficacy of Pradhosha Worship
Pradhosham denotes the end of day time and the beginning of night. This
is also called the period of Asuras( Rakshasa Vaelai). So during this period one is
forbidden to eat or drink. One is advised to perform Siva Pooja at this period.
The duration between 4.30 pm and 6.00 pm is called Nithya Pradhosham
The same duration of time on the Thrio Dhasi day immediately following the
New Moon day is called Monthly Pradhosham(maassa pradhosham) and the
same duration on the Thrio Dhasi day following the Full Moon day is called
Paksha Prashodham.
The Pradhosham that falls on any Saturday is called Maha
Pradhosham.(Sani Pradhosham) Worshipping Siva on this day is bound to give
the efficacy for a period of 5 years. Worshipping the Pradhosha Utsava Moorthys
(procession of the idols along the corridors) is equal to witnessing the
rejuvenation of three temples (Kumbabishekam) and also equal to visiting 100
holy shrines.
Worshiping Mode
Take early bath and perform daily rituals with full concentration. Go to
any Siva Temple in the morning and worship the deity there. If possible one can
undertake fast also. Holy scriptures such Thevaram, Rudhra Japam etc. can be
chanted.
In the evening go to the Siva temple with archana materials such as
arugampul garland for Nandheeswarar, flowers, bilva garland for Siva. Lighting
ghee lamps , distributing free prasathams to the devotees, supplying sugar added
hot milk to the vedic pandits, sivachariars and odhuvaars etc. are bound to have
the very significant effect on the devotee.
The devotees are advised NOT TO TOUCH ANY IDOLS/ STATUES
etc. If anyone touches them out of curiosity, it would have a negative effect
instead. The respective Sivachariars are the ONLY authorized people to either
touch or perform abishekam or adorn the flower garlands on such idols.
Special Benefits
Devotees who worship Lord Siva with Goddess Parvathi on the
pradhosham will have the blessings equal to that of performing thousand
Aswametha yagnam. Especially witnessing the Deepa Aaradhanai showing to the
Idols at the Easanya Moola during the second round would relieve the
devotees from their sickness, debts, poverty, sin, deadly pains etc. Offering
Kaapparisi, arugampul , vanni leaves to the Nandheeswarar would keep the them
from the evil effects of Saturn.
Vendhan Patti Nei Nandheeswarar
Last week we had a rare chance to worship the Nandheeswarar in
Vendhan patti village (near Ponnamaravathi) which is 40 km from Pudukottai in
Tamil Nadu, India. Generally Nandhi Devar could be seen in any Siva temple .
Here the Nandheeswarar is very significant and unique as he is rightly called
Nei Nandheeswarar.(Nandhi Coated with Ghee). The Nandhi Statue is fully
covered with ghee. Devotees worshiping this Nandheeswarar are bound to have
unlimited wealth and happiness.
The ghee offered by the devotees is smeared on the statue of the Nandhi
daily. Normally, if ghee is scattered in our houses, we can see ants and flies
attracted to the scattered ghee. Curiously, not a single ant nor even a fly is
attracted to the statue plastetred with ghee. On pradhosham days, people flock
this temple and the quantity of ghee offered is so great that ghee abishekam is
performed. This is a feast for the eyes of the devotees. The pradhosham pooja is
being celebrated in a grand manner with austerity.
Two Nandhi statues were brought from Kodumpalur in Trichy district.
One was installed in Tanjore Big Temple and the other in Vendhanpatti. .During
the Pradhosha Pooja, abishekams with milk, curd, tender coconut water , ghee
etc. are performed on the Nei Nandheeswarar .
There goes a story about a Chettiar blessed by this Nei Nandheeswarar. He
was a staunch devotee of Chockalingeswarar and Meenakshi, the presiding deities
of this temple and the Nandheeswarar.(lataer came to be celebrated as Nei
Nandheeswarar).
The Chettiar was suffering from severe stomach pain. No medicine could
be of use to him. One night as he was sleeping, he dreamt of the Nandhi of the
temple. He was told to apply a coat of ghee on the Nandheeswarar and he simply
obeyed. Miraculously, his stomach pain vanished. So the Nandhi came to be
celebrated as Nei Nandheeswarar later on.
People suffering from various diseases thronged the temple. They
consumed the abisheka ghee and were healed. But again the Nandhi appeared in
the dream of the devotees and warned that the prasatha ghee should not be
consumed.
From then onwards the ghee so accumulataed is being collected in
buckets and stored in a well of 6feet depth called Nei Kinaru( Well of Ghee).
To the astonishment of all, even in this well of ghee, which is located on
the Easanya moola of the temple, no single ant nor a fly could be seen. Indeed it
is a wonder which speaks volumes of the grace of the ever helping Lord Siva.
A visit to this temple is bound to have an indelible impression on our
minds.l.

திருவைந்தெழுத்து மந்திரம் வாழ்க! திருவைந் தெழுத்தின் வடிவாக விளங்கும் இறைவனது திருவடி வாழ்க! இமைக்கும் நேரமும் கூட என் மனத்தினின்றும் நீங்காதவனது திருவடி வாழ்க! திருப்பெருந்துறையில் என்னை ஆட்கொண்ட குருமூர்த்தி யினது திருவடி வாழ்க! ஆகம வடிவாக நின்று இனிமையைத் தருபவனாகிய இறைவனது திருவடி வாழ்க! ஒன்றாயும் பலவாயும் உள்ள இறைவனது திருவடி வாழ்க! மன ஓட்டத்தைத் தொலைத்து என்னை அடிமை கொண்ட முழுமுதற் கடவுளது திருவடி வெற்றி பெறுக! பிறவித் தளையை அறுக்கின்ற இறைவனது வீரக் கழலணிந்த திருவடிகள் வெற்றி பெறுக! தன்னை வணங்காத அயலார்க்கு எட்டாத வனாயிருப்பவனது தாமரை மலர்போலும் திருவடிகள் வெற்றி பெறுக! கைகூம்பப் பெற்றவர்க்கு மனம் மகிழ்ந்து அருளுகின்ற இறைவன் திருவடிகள் வெற்றி பெறுக! கைகள் தலைமேல் கூம்பப் பெற்றவரை உயரச் செய்கிற சிறப்புடையவனது திருவடி வெற்றி பெறுக!
ஈசனது திருவடிக்கு வணக்கம். எம் தந்தையினது திருவடிக்கு வணக்கம். ஒளியுருவை உடையவனது திருவடிக்கு வணக்கம். சிவ பிரானது திருவடிக்கு வணக்கம். அடியாரது அன்பின்கண் நிலைத்து நின்ற மாசற்றவனது திருவடிக்கு வணக்கம். நிலையாமையுடைய பிறவியை ஒழிக்கின்ற அரசனது திருவடிக்கு வணக்கம். சிறப்புப் பொருந்திய திருப்பெருந்துறையின்கண் எழுந்தருளிய நம்முடைய கடவுளது திருவடிக்கு வணக்கம். தெவிட்டாத இன்பத்தைக் கொடுக் கின்ற மலைபோலும் கருணையையுடையவனுக்கு வணக்கம். நெற்றிக்கண்ணுடைய சிவபெருமான் தனது அருட்கண் காட்ட, அதனால் அவன் திருமுன்பு வந்து அடைந்து, நினைத்தற்குக் கூடாத அழகு வாய்ந்த அவனது திருவடியை வணங்கியபின், சிவபெரு மானாகிய அவன் என் மனத்தில் நிலை பெற்றிருந்ததனால், அவ னுடைய திருவருளாலே அவனுடைய திருவடியை வணங்கி மனம் மகிழும்படியும், முன்னைய வினைமுழுமையும் கெடவும், சிவனது அநாதி முறைமையான பழமையை யான் சொல்லுவேன்.
வானமாகி நிறைந்தும் மண்ணாகி நிறைந்தும் மேலானவனே! இயல்பாய் விளங்குகின்ற ஒளிப்பிழம்பாகி மனத்தைக் கடந்து அளவின்றி நிற்பவனே! உன்னுடைய மிக்க சிறப்பை, கொடிய வினையை உடையவனாகிய யான், புகழுகின்ற விதம் சிறிதும் அறி கிலேன். புல்லாகியும், பூண்டாகியும், புழுவாகியும், மரமாகியும் பல மிருகங்களாகியும், பறவையாகியும், பாம்பாகியும், கல்லாகியும், மனிதராகியும், பேயாகியும், பூதகணங்களாகியும், வலிய அசுரராகி யும், முனிவராகியும், தேவராகியும் இயங்குகின்ற இந்த நிலையியற் பொருள் இயங்கியற் பொருள் என்னும் இருவகைப் பொருள் களுள்ளே எல்லாப் பிறவிகளிலும் பிறந்து, யான் மெலிவடைந்தேன். எம் பெருமானே! இப்பொழுது உண்மையாகவே, உன் அழகிய திருவடிகளைக் கண்டு வீடு பெற்றேன்.
நான் உய்யும்படி என் மனத்தில் பிரணவ உருவாய் நின்ற மெய்யனே! மாசற்றவனே! இடபவாகனனே! மறைகள், ஐயனே என்று துதிக்க உயர்ந்து ஆழ்ந்து பரந்த நுண் பொருளானவனே! வெம்மை யானவனே! தண்ணியனே! ஆன்மாவாய் நின்ற விமலனே! நிலையாத பொருள்கள் யாவும் என்னை விட்டு ஒழிய, குருவாய் எழுந்தருளி மெய்யுணர்வு வடிவமாய், விளங்குகின்ற உண்மை ஒளியே! எவ் வகை யான அறிவும் இல்லாத எனக்கு இன்பத்தைத் தந்த இறைவனே! அஞ்ஞானத்தின் வாதனையை நீக்குகின்ற நல்ல ஞானமயமானவனே! தோற்றம், நிலை, முடிவு என்பவை இல்லாதவனே! எல்லா உலகங்களையும் படைப்பாய்; நிலை பெறுத்துவாய்; ஒடுக்குவாய்; அருள் செய்வாய்; அடியேனைப் பிறவியிற் செலுத்துவாய்; உன் தொண்டில் புகப் பண்ணுவாய்; பூவின் மணம் போல நுட்பமாய் இருப்பவனே! தொலைவில் இருப்பவனே! அண்மையில் இருப்பவனே! சொல்லும் மனமும் கடந்து நின்ற வேதப் பொருளாய் உள்ளவனே! சிறந்த அன்பரது மனத்துள் கறந்த பாலும் சருக்கரையும் நெய்யும் கூடின போல இன்பம் மிகுந்து நின்று, எடுத்த பிறப்பை ஒழிக்கின்ற எம் பெருமானே!
ஐந்து நிறங்களை உடையவனே! தேவர்கள் துதிக்க அவர்களுக்கு ஒளித்து இருந்தவனே! எம் பெருமானே! வலிய வினையையுடையவனாகிய என்னை, மறையும்படி மூடியுள்ள அறியாமையாகிய ஆணவம் கெடுதற்பொருட்டு, புண்ணிய பாவங்கள் என்கின்ற அருங்கயிற்றால் கட்டப்பெற்று, வெளியே தோலால் மூடி, எங்கும் புழுக்கள் நெளிகின்ற அழுக்கை மறைத்து ஆக்கிய, மலம் ஒழுகுகின்ற, ஒன்பது வாயிலையுடைய உடம்பாகிய குடிசை குலையும்படி, ஐம்புலன்களும் வஞ்சனை பண்ணுதலால் உன்னை விட்டு நீங்கும் மனத்தினாலே மாசற்றவனே! உன்பொருட்டுப் பொருந்தின அன்பை உடையேனாய், மனம் கசிந்து உருகுகின்ற நன்மையில்லாத சிறியேனுக்குக் கருணைபுரிந்து பூமியின்மேல் எழுந்தருளி நீண்ட திருவடிகளைக் காட்டி, நாயினும் கடையனாய்க் கிடந்த அடியேனுக்குத் தாயினும் மேலாகிய அருள் வடிவான உண்மைப் பொருளே!
களங்கமற்ற சோதியாகிய மரத்தில் பூத்த, பூப்போன்ற சுடரே! அளவிலாப் பேரொளியனே! தேனே! அரிய அமுதே! சிவபுரத்தை யுடையானே! பாசமாகிய தொடர்பையறுத்துக் காக்கின்ற ஆசிரியனே! அன்போடு கூடிய அருளைச் செய்து என் மனத்தில் உள்ள வஞ்சம் அழிய, பெயராமல் நின்ற பெருங்கருணையாகிய பெரிய நதியே! தெவிட்டாத அமிர்தமே! எல்லையில்லாத பெருமானே! ஆராயாதார் மனத்தில் மறைகின்ற ஒளியை யுடையானே! என் மனத்தை நீர் போல உருகச் செய்து என் அரிய உயிராய் நின்றவனே! சுகமும் துக்கமும் இயற்கையில் இல்லாதவனே! அன்பர் பொருட்டு அவைகளை உடையவனே! அன்பர்களிடத்து அன்புடைவனே! கலப்பினால் எல்லாப் பொருள்களும் ஆகி, தன்மையினால் அல்லாதவனும் ஆகின்ற பேரொளியை யுடையவனே! நிறைந்த இருளானவனே! புறத்தே வெளிப்படாத பெருமை உடையவனே! முதல்வனே! முடிவும் நடுவும் ஆகி அவையல்லாது இருப்பவனே! என்னை இழுத்து ஆட்கொண்டருளின எமது தந்தையாகிய சிவபெருமானே! மிகுந்த உண்மை ஞானத்தால் சிந்தித்து அறிபவர் மனத்தினாலும், எதிரிட்டுக் காண்பதற்கு அரிதாகிய காட்சியே! ஒருவரால் நுட்பம் ஆக்குதல் இல்லாத இயற்கையில் நுட்பமாகிய அறிவே! போதலும் வருதலும் நிற்றலும் இல்லாத புண்ணியனே! எம்மைக் காப்பாற்றுகின்ற எம் அரசனே! காண்பதற்கரிய பெரிய ஒளியே! மகாநதி போன்ற இன்பப் பெருக்கே! அப்பனே! மேலோனே! நிலைபெற்ற தோற்றத்தையுடைய விளங்குகின்ற ஒளியாகியும் சொல்லப்படாத நுட்பமாகிய அறிவாகி யும் மாறுபடுதலையுடைய உலகத்தில் வெவ்வேறு பொருளாய்க் காணப்பட்டு வந்து, அறிவாய் விளங்கும் தெளிவானவனே! தெளி வின் தெளிவே! என் மனத்துள் ஊற்றுப் போன்ற பருகுதற்குப் ெபாருந்திய அமிர்தமே! தலைவனே!

சிவனின் அவதாரங்கள்
Shiva (Sanskrit: Auspicious One), or Siva, is one of the main Deities of Hinduism, worshipped as the paramount lord by the Saivite sects of India. Shiva is one of the most complex gods of India, embodying seemingly contradictory qualities. He is the destroyer and the restorer, the great ascetic and the symbol of sensuality, the benevolent herdsman of souls and the wrathful avenger.
Shiva was originally known as Rudra, a minor deity addressed only three times in the Rig Veda. He gained importance after absorbing some of the characteristics of an earlier fertility god and became Shiva, part of the trinity, or trimurti, with Vishnu and Brahma.
The Cult of Shiva
Shaivism, or Saivism, is one of the most popular Hindu cults. It embraces many theological practices, although all agree on three principles: pati. or God; pasu, or individual soul; and pasa, or bonds that confine the soul to earthly existence. The aim of Shaivites is to rid their souls of bondage and achieve shivata, the "nature of Shiva". They achieve this through ascetic practices and penances, with an emphasis on yoga and renunciation. Many Shaivites become wandering sadhus, or hold men. Shiavites mark their foreheads with three horizontal marks representing the three aspects of Shiva.
Shiva wears a snake coiled around his upper arms and neck symbolizing the power he has over the most deadly of creatures. Snakes are also used to symbolize the Hindu dogma of reincarnation. Their natural process of molting or shedding their skin is symbolic of the human souls transmigration of bodies from one life to another.
Shiva's female consort and wife is Parvati; because of his generosity and reverence towards Parvati, Shiva is considered an ideal role model for a husband. The divine couple together with their sons - the six-headed Skanda and the elephant headed Shiva - reside on Mount Kailasa in the Himalayas.
Shiva is often pictured in a pacific mood with his consort Parvati, as the cosmic dancer Nataraja, as a naked ascetic, as a mendicant beggar, as a yogi Dhakshinamurthy, and as the androgynous union of Shiva and Parvati in one body (Ardhanarisvara).
Shiva is represented in a variety of forms. One such form is as a lingam. The ovoid shape is a representation of the absolute perfection of Lord Shiva - if that which is beyond form had to be given form, the lingam would be the closest form to the mystical experience of the absolute perfection of Shiva.
The Story of the Shiva Lingam:
Shiva saw not sense in the transitory pleasures of life, so he rejected samsara, smeared his body with ash, closed his eyes and performed austerities.
Shiva's tapas generated so much heat that his body transformed into a pillar of fire - a blazing lingam that threatened to destroy the whole world. The gods did not know how to control Shiva's fire.
Suddenly there appeared a yoni - the divine vessel of the mother-goddess. It caught the fiery lingam and contained its heat, thus saving the cosmos from untimely destruction
Thiruvalangadu, north of Madras, is associated with the dance contest between Shiva and his consort in the form of Kali. According to legend, Shiva danced vigorously, and to subdue Kali, threw up his leg in the rhythm of the dance. Being a lady, Kali could not repeat this feat and stood dismayed. This dance and the subjugation of Kali, are described in the hymns of the female saint-poet Karaikkal Ammai.
Shiva also takes the form of Ardhanari, his androgynous form. The right side of the sculpture is Shiva and the left side is Parvati. The attributes of each are split directly down the middle.
Another example of Shiva's apparent synthesis of male and female attributes is seen in his earrings. He wears one earring in the style of a man and the other as a female as shown in the two different earrings Shiva wears.
He often holds a trident, which represents the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu. It is also said to represent the threefold qualities of nature: creation, preservation and destruction, although preservation is usually attributed to Vishnu.
As the destroyer Shiva is dark and terrible, encircled with serpents and a crown of skulls.
In the pictures to the right and left Shiva wears sacred Rudraksha beads, perhaps a reference to his earlier name Rudra.
His guardian is Nandi (the white bull), whose statue can often be seen watching over the main shrine. The bull is said to embody sexual energy, fertility. Riding on its back, Shiva is in control of these impulses.
In the picture to the left you can clearly see Shiva's third eye. The third eye is a symbol of higher consciousness. It is also something with which he can destroy his enemies "with fire." He can also kill all the gods and other creatures during the periodic destruction of the universe. Shiva's third eye first appeared when Parvati, his wife, playfully covered his other two eyes, therefore plunging the world into darkness and putting it in danger of destruction.
The crescent moon Shiva wears on his crown, besides being a symbol of Kama the goddess of nightly love, also represents the bull, Nandi, a fertility symbol.
Shiva holds a skull that represents samsara, the cycle of life, death and rebirth. Samsara is a central belief in Hinduism. Shiva himself also represents this complete cycle because he is Mahakala the Lord of Time, destroying and creating all things.

Rudraksh Introduction
Rudraksh is formed by association of two words, 'RUDRA' and 'AKSHA'. Rudra is the name of Lord Shiva. Aksha means 'tear'. It is said that the plant of Rudraksh is originated from the tear drops of Lord Shiva. As per the vedic scriptures Rudraksh can nullify the effects of malefic planets to a great extent. Shastras say Rudraksh of any mukhis can never do any harm to the wearer unlike Navratnas, which have to be carefully chosen. No other necklace or bead is so auspicious and powerful as Rudraksh.
Rudraksh come in different mukhis or the clefts or furrows on the surface. Shastras speak of 1 to 38 mukhis but normally 1 to 14 mukhis are used for astrological benefits. Each bead has a different effect on you, depending on the number of mukhis it has. Each Rudraksh is very individualistic and has to be carefully matched with one's horoscope for it to be beneficial.
The seed of Rudraksh has been given a very special place and it is credited with mystical and divine properties. The botanical name of the Rudraksh plant is 'ELAEOCARPUS GRANITRUS'. This is found in the various parts of the world. It is said that the seed of Rudraksh contains the secrets of entire evolution of the cosmos within it.
It is believed that one who wear Rudraksh on their bodies, cannot be affected by sins. Even if, one wears Rudraksh on his body, without doing worship and saying the sacred mantra, does no get near any sinful deed or thought.
The Rudraksh are worn for their specific benefits. These are much more powerful and can help achieve wonders, if energized and empowered the right way. Rudraksh of different mukhis pleases the corresponding planets. It may be sufficient to go in for only for those mukhis whose ruling planets, cause malefic effects. Before wearing the Rudraksh it is better to cleanse and purify it with milk, ghee, oil etc. and do pran prathista (give life to the Rudraksh) when the mantras corresponding to the mukhis are chanted, the Rudraksh gets activated
